Science laboratory practical work is a foundational component of secondary school science education, developing learners’ experimental skills, scientific reasoning, and understanding of scientific methodology. However, laboratories also present significant safety risks including chemical exposure, fire, electrical hazards, glassware accidents, and biological contamination that require systematic safety management to prevent learner and teacher harm. In Limulunga District, Western Province, Zambia, secondary school biology and science laboratories operate under conditions of severe resource constraint, with inadequate safety equipment, insufficient teacher safety training, and absence of systematic safety management protocols creating accident risks that compromise both learner safety and the educational quality of laboratory instruction. This article examines the nature of accidents and safety practices in secondary school science laboratories in Limulunga District, contextualising findings within global scholarship on laboratory safety management, AI-enhanced safety monitoring systems, digital safety education, and smart laboratory governance. Drawing on a mixed-methods survey, findings document frequent minor accidents, inadequate personal protective equipment provision, absent chemical storage protocols, and limited teacher safety training. AI-powered laboratory safety monitoring, digital safety training platforms, and smart chemical management systems are identified as evidence-based improvement pathways. Policy recommendations are presented.

Child and adolescent mental health have emerged as a critical global public health concern, with increasing prevalence of mental health disorders among young people and significant implications for individual development, educational achievement, and long-term wellbeing. This cross-sectional analytical study examines emerging trends in child and adolescent mental health and evaluates clinical challenges and intervention strategies among 216 children and adolescents aged 6–18 years. Anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, and attention deficit and behavioural disorders were the most prevalent mental health conditions. Combined psychological and psychosocial interventions demonstrated the highest clinical improvement scores (F=7.12, p=0.001). The study highlights the importance of integrated, multidisciplinary approaches, early screening, and collaboration among healthcare, educational, and community systems to address the growing burden of child and adolescent mental health disorders.

A free, independent, and accountable media is foundational to democratic governance providing citizens with the information they need to make informed electoral choices, holding political parties accountable to their stated platforms, and serving as a watchdog against electoral misconduct. In Zambia, media coverage of political party election activities faces significant challenges encompassing editorial independence pressures, resource constraints, safety risks for journalists, regulatory interference, and the emerging threats of digital misinformation and social media manipulation. This article examines the challenges faced by media in covering political parties’ election activities, with reference to a case study of Kanyonyo Ward, contextualising findings within global scholarship on digital journalism, AI-driven fact-checking, algorithmic misinformation detection, and democratic media accountability. Drawing on a descriptive survey, findings identify political pressure on editorial independence, limited journalist training in election reporting, resource constraints, access restrictions, and digital misinformation propagation as primary challenges. AI-powered fact-checking tools, digital journalist safety platforms, and blockchain-enabled editorial transparency systems are identified as promising technological responses. Policy recommendations are presented.

Geriatric psychiatry encompasses the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health disorders in older adults, with particular emphasis on the complex interactions between ageing, cognitive decline, and psychiatric conditions. Conditions such as geriatric depression, dementia, late-onset anxiety disorders, and psychotic disorders represent significant mental health challenges among elderly populations, often coexisting with physical health comorbidities and cognitive impairment. This cross-sectional analytical study examines clinical patterns, determinants, and management strategies for geriatric psychiatric disorders and cognitive decline among 196 elderly patients aged 60–85 years. Geriatric depression was the most prevalent psychiatric condition associated with cognitive impairment, and combined pharmacological and psychosocial interventions demonstrated the highest clinical improvement (F=6.92, p=0.002). The study highlights the importance of early identification, comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation, and integrated multidisciplinary management in addressing geriatric psychiatric disorders and cognitive decline.

The rapid expansion of digital technologies has fundamentally transformed the landscape of mental health care delivery, creating new opportunities for improving psychological services through digital platforms, mobile health applications, artificial intelligence systems, and telepsychiatry. Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) offer scalable, cost-effective, and accessible solutions for addressing global mental health challenges. However, the integration of digital technologies into mental health care also raises significant concerns regarding clinical safety, privacy protection, ethical governance, and digital inequalities. This cross-sectional analytical study examines the opportunities and risks associated with digital mental health interventions among 234 individuals utilising digital mental health platforms. Telepsychiatry consultations demonstrated the highest user satisfaction scores (F=5.62, p=0.004). The study highlights the need for robust regulatory frameworks, ethical guidelines, and evidence-based evaluation of digital mental health technologies to ensure safe and effective implementation of technology-enabled psychological care.

Mental health disorders constitute a major global health burden and are increasingly recognised as essential components of comprehensive healthcare systems. Despite the high prevalence of mental health conditions, many individuals face significant barriers in accessing specialised psychiatric services due to stigma, limited healthcare resources, and fragmented service delivery. Integrating mental health services into primary care settings has emerged as an effective strategy for improving accessibility, early diagnosis, and continuity of care. This cross-sectional analytical study examines the effectiveness of integrating mental health services within primary healthcare systems among 212 patients. Integration significantly improves early detection of mental health conditions, enhances access to treatment, and reduces disparities in mental health service utilisation. Patients aged 31–45 years reported the highest satisfaction with integrated mental health services (F=5.84, p=0.003). The study highlights the importance of strengthening primary healthcare infrastructure, expanding mental health training for primary care providers, and implementing community-based mental health programmes.

substance use disorders (SUDs) represent a significant public health challenge worldwide, contributing to increased morbidity, mortality, and socioeconomic burden across populations. This cross-sectional analytical study examines evidence-based treatment approaches for substance use disorders and evaluates the effectiveness of integrated therapeutic interventions in improving treatment outcomes among 214 individuals. Integrated treatment models combining pharmacotherapy, behavioural counselling, and psychosocial rehabilitation provide the most effective outcomes. Combined pharmacological and behavioural therapy demonstrated the highest recovery outcomes (F=6.21, p=0.002). Emerging digital health technologies and AI-based interventions also show promising potential in enhancing addiction treatment and patient monitoring. The study highlights the importance of multidisciplinary treatment frameworks that integrate medical, psychological, and social rehabilitation strategies to address the complex nature of substance use disorders.

Head and neck malignancies represent a heterogeneous group of cancers arising from the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and salivary glands. These cancers account for a significant proportion of global cancer morbidity and mortality, particularly in regions with high prevalence of tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and human papillomavirus infection. Due to the anatomical complexity of the head and neck region and the functional importance of these structures in speech, swallowing, and respiration, treatment requires carefully coordinated multidisciplinary care. This cross-sectional analytical study examines the effectiveness of multimodal treatment approaches among 192 patients. Combined treatment strategies involving surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy demonstrated the highest survival outcomes (F=6.51, p=0.001), particularly in patients with advanced-stage tumours. Integration of targeted therapies and immunotherapy also showed promising improvements in treatment response rates. The study emphasises the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration, personalised treatment planning, and integration of emerging therapeutic technologies in improving outcomes for patients with head and neck malignancies.

Pathology reports serve as critical communication tools between pathologists and clinicians, providing essential diagnostic information that guides clinical decision-making and patient management. This cross-sectional analytical study investigates the impact of standardized pathology reporting systems on diagnostic quality and clinical decision-making using 212 pathology reports. Synoptic reports demonstrated dramatically higher rates of high-quality classification (88.6% vs 38.4%) and significantly superior documentation rates for all critical diagnostic parameters. ANOVA confirmed statistically significant differences in report quality scores between narrative and synoptic formats across both oncological (F=9.28, p=0.001) and non-oncological disease categories. The findings highlight the importance of adopting international reporting standards, synoptic reporting templates, and digital pathology reporting systems.

Hematopathology plays a critical role in diagnosing and managing hematological disorders, including leukemias, lymphomas, myeloproliferative neoplasms, and other blood-related diseases. Advances in molecular biology, immunophenotyping, flow cytometry, and computational diagnostics have significantly transformed the field. This cross-sectional analytical study evaluates recent advancements in hematopathological diagnostic methodologies using 224 hematological diagnostic cases. Integrated multi-modal diagnostic approaches combining molecular testing, immunophenotyping, and digital pathology significantly improve classification accuracy, achieving 96.4% classification contribution rate and 92.6% critical finding rate for the full integrated approach (F=8.14, p=0.001). The study highlights the importance of multidisciplinary diagnostic frameworks, molecular diagnostics, and digital technologies in modern hematopathology.
