Abstract
Here we can examine Mercury (Budha) and Jupiter (Guru) as traditional significators of knowledge-based professions, with special emphasis on the progressive academic roles of school teacher, lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor and professor. Classical Jyotiṣa does not use these modern academic designations; therefore, the comparison proposed here is a research-oriented extension of classical principles. Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra describes Mercury as the giver of speech and Jupiter as the giver of knowledge, while Bṛhat Jātaka’s chapter on vocation explicitly associates Mercury-related vocational indications with writing, mathematics, poetry, wisdom and arts, and Jupiter-related indications with learned persons, religion and law. The Mercury may be studied as a significator of communication and intellectual transmission, whereas Jupiter may be studied as a significator of higher knowledge, teaching, guidance and scholarship. The 10th house and its lord remain the primary professional framework, with the 5th and 9th houses providing supporting educational indicators.
